Mitsuoka Motor, a manufacturer of retro-styled automobiles in Toyama Prefecture, specially produced the vehicle as the final model of the long-selling Viewt small car. The company has decided to terminate production of the Viewt, whose first model was launched in 1993, at the end of 2009 citing a problem in clearing safety requirements due to its unique classic design.

The Subaru R2 employs a newly developed undercarriage, which makes it weigh about 70 kilograms lighter than the existing Pleo minicar. The new car has a high fuel efficiency of 24 kilometers per liter.
